Driving your child to a school event: what are the implications?

I sometimes like to think that after five years of running our regular news service for school administrators we have answered most queries and questions that are sent in.
.
But I keep being surprised, as a new question turned up today from a school?
.
Does anyone have a policy for parents transporting pupils to sporting activities/events?
.
I can see the immediate issue here.  If you transport their own children – and perhaps through a car sharing arrangement the children of other parents – to an out-of-school activity – who is responsible if there is an accident and a child is injured?
.
Is it the school, or the parent driving?  And does it make any difference if the event is compulsory or voluntary?  And what about whether the event takes place within the normal school hours or after school hours?
.
If you have any insights on this and you would care to share them, could you send your thoughts in.  I am also emailing all the school administrators who are members of the School of Educational Administration and Management to ask them if they know the answer.
.
And if you have any insights into the questions raised here, again it would be very much appreciated if you could send your thoughts in.
.
If you want to write to me personally, rather than post a reply please send your email to Tony@schools.co.uk and write TRANSPORT on the subject line.  (Adding the subject line really helps me sort out my incoming emails!)
